Granny Chic... Yeah It's A Thing

There's a new movement that has caught the attention of quite a few major fashion houses, but truthfully there's nothing new about it.

The quirky Iris Apfel
As the Wall Street Journal put it, 'Conservative is the new radical' and women everywhere are raiding their grandmother's closets; well maybe not literally.

The fabulous Diana Vreeland
Fashion has a great sense of humor, one season gets too drab, and the next bursts with color. One season is too refined, and the next is full on punk. This season fashion is flipping off modern styles by serving up kitten heels, cropped jackets, and full coverage; all on women in their 20's.

Wall Street Journal Duo
We couldn't be happier! Its about time older women were praised for their inspiring, chic, and timeless way of dressing. Age appropriate does not have to be drab and does not have to have an age limit. It's refreshing to see restraint look so good!

Ines de la Fressange - Parisian Chic
Lauren Hutton
Ulyana Sergeenko - Famous Russian designer who has the old world look down pat
Fashion icon Miroslava Duma
So this season ask yourself, what would grandma do?

AllSaints: The Rise

AllSaints is known to have one of the most meteoritic global expansions of any fashion company to date.

After the companies shareholders were bought out by fashion financier Kevin Stanford in 2004, they started making moves towards global expansion.

It wasn't until 2011 that they reached true global recognition, expanding to the U.S. and Canada.

This massive expansion was due to a number of factors, but primarily one: they aren't just a fashion company. Their brand represents a cultural phenomenon that is spreading throughout the fashion and entertainment world.

Although they are first and foremost a fashion retailer, they also have made themselves a big name in the indie music industry, giving them a "hip" feel to everything they do.

In 2011, the company expanded their cultural message to public service, partnering with the "Not For Sale" campaign, which opposes human trafficking throughout the world. You can find some of their "Not For Sale" clothes on their website, and become a part of the fight against human trafficking.

2013 Beauty Summit Bodes Well for Fashion

This past week in New York, fashion blog and newsletter Women's Wear Daily hosted the 2013 Beauty Summit. Some of the biggest names in the fashion and beauty industries came out to talk about the big things happening in the fashion world.

Deb Henretta, from beauty conglomerate Proctor and Gamble, made a speech pushing for the use of recent innovations in technology to be used in the beauty industries.
Other speakers focused on business success and creative product design.

To us at myDROBE, we know these discussions over innovations in fashion and beauty are incredibly important to their evolution.

Possible Merger Between Luxury Department Stores

Big things are happening in the corporate fashion world right now. Private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) is making moves to acquire two luxury department stores: New York-based Sak's Fifth Avenue and privately owned Neiman Marcus. Though no deal has been made yet, the acquisition of these two companies could prove very fruitful for both stores and the equity firm.

The idea is that Saks' Fifth Ave and Neiman Marcus would continue to sell out of their own buildings, keeping up the face of two competing stores, but the back end would merge, thus cutting costs and competition for both of them.

Additionally, Sak's has serious footholds in New York and Palm Beach, whereas Neiman Marcus is known to do well in Texas, so a merger could help expand both companies' reach within the U.S., and possibly further.

Part of this acquisition would be to look at the possibility of spreading these stores into the untouched European market. There is nothing that points to this merger doing anything for a European expansion, but the musings on Wall Street point to the possibility.

We at myDROBE love these stores, and anything that'll let 'em prosper, we support. We'll be sitting back, eagerly waiting for the next phase of luxury department stores.

High End Fashion and the Economic Recession

When the American economy took a nosedive in 2008, now known as the "Great Recession", economists and analysts made predictions on the projected values of consumer goods for the coming years. Luckily for us Drobers, "High End Fashion" has remained largely untouched by the recession, just as those analysts predicted.

Worldwide, brands like Gucci, Prada, and Versace have shown burgeoning sales while other consumer goods have dropped dramatically. As the stock market and home prices continue to rise, and unemployment begins to fall, Americans are spending more money.

In early 2013, Hermès International reported a 21% increase in sales in the Americas for their fourth quarter. This trend continued with brands like Tiffany and Cartier, which makes us very happy Drobers to know that our favorites in fashion are alive and well, and definitely here to stay.

The impact of high end fashion isn't just on the runway and in your DROBE, as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City brings in 850 million annually, and that's nothing to laugh at. We could buy a lot of dresses with that. A lot.

Though this trend is expected to slow down, it still means that these high end brands are safe from the recession, and that they will continue to provide us with beautiful clothes and a style to die for. Maybe it's because their names precede their brands, or maybe its because their clothes are just that good. Either way, we at myDROBE are ecstatic.
