Thunder Storms Didn't Stop The 2013 CFDA Awards

The entertainment industry has the Oscars. Television: the Emmys.
And (as you know)...
Fashion has the CFDA Awards!

The Council of Fashion Designers of America held their 2013 award show yesterday at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, New York. Hosted by Swarovski, the event recognizes individuals in the fashion world who make contributions to the industry in all facets of the art, from designers to media journalists.

Andy Cohen

The awards were presented by television executive and talk show personality Andy Cohen, who strode on stage to resounding applause. (duh) His opening monologue was endearing, poking fun at designers Tory Burch, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg, though the meme jokes didn't seem to hit home. Tough luck, Cohen...

Hillary Clinton and Oscar de la Renta

Among the many prestigious awards for the night, none is more so than the Founder's Award in Honor of Eleanor Lambert. The award honors an individual who makes a unique contribution to the world of fashion. This year's recipient was fashion icon Oscar de la Renta, a Dominican immigrant who has changed and influenced the culture of fashion for nearly half a century. This award was presented by Hillary Clinton, who deadpanned her famous pantsuits before very seriously introducing the legendary Oscar de la Renta.

Vera Wang

Vera Wang received the lifetime achievement award from the world-wide fashion icon Ralph Lauren. Lauren, who still looked like an absolute boss in a wide collar tuxedo, spoke of his time working with Vera. He told of her first initial break from his company nearly twenty years ago, to her propulsion to the top tier of the industry. Vera accepted her award graciously, holding back tears as she was handed the award from her former mentor.

Thom Browne

The Menswear Designer of the year award went to Thom Browne (featured in last months Scene Magazine... Love!), who beat out Michael Bastian and Steven Cox and Michael Silver for Duckie Brown, then walked up on stage wearing a great looking tuxedo top with...shorts(?) Interesting choice, but hey, he's the best designer in men's fashion... he can do whatever he wants!

Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough

Women's Designer of the year went to Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler and was presented by the beautiful Kerry Washington. The pair gave a poignant acceptance speech, talking of the love and support of the CFDA and the industry as a whole.

Phillip Lim and Rose Byrne            Riccardo Tisci and Jessica Chastain
Tim Blanks

Other recipients included Phillip Lim for Accessory Designer of the Year, Riccardo Tisci for the International Award, Tim Blanks for the Media Award, Colleen Atwood for the Board of Directors' Tribute Award, Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty for Suno for the Swarovski Awards for Womenswear, and Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne for Public School for the Swarovski Awards for Menswear.

The CFDA awards, as always, was a grand show that truly honored some of the industries biggest names. Andy Cohen couldn't really get his jokes right, but was a great presenter nonetheless. As with any awards show, there was some seriously beautiful fashion on that red carpet. We've got these designers and more, so see who's wearing what, and shop till you drop Drobers.

And by the way, if you didn't happen to get the red ticket last night, you can stream the entire show from www.style.com
